Discussion Questions for In the Name of the Brother
It's time for questions and discussion points for In the Name of the Brother!
1. Our Outsider has a name: Greg Mendell. In tv shows names have meaning and they have even more meaning on this show so the question is: what meaning is there to name the outsider after Gregor Mendel? Is he perhaps a scientist of some sort? All we know about him so far is that he is from Pennsylvania, has a 'her' who he calls honey, takes pictures of food, and has been traveling. Do you think he has been looking for Storybrooke? Maybe heard a rumor or a story (perhaps August got drunk at some point) and decided to follow up on it?
2. I thought they were being more consistent about Emma's lie detecting ability this season but, unless she was only pretending to believe him, she has been fooled again. And could she have been any more weird and unprofessional in her questioning of Greg? If he wasn't suspicious before he would have been after their talk. I guess she is more off-balance about the whole magic and fairytales thing than I realized.
3. Was it smart to save Greg's life? Does the fact that they even talked about it tarnish the 'heroes' at all? Or maybe not since Emma, Snow, and Charming were all quite firmly in favor of saving him.
4. Did Charming and Snow talk at all since she came back or have they spent all their time resting? I would think Daniel coming back to life, attacking Whale AND Henry, and having to be dusted by Regina would be something you'd want to share when asked if there was any news.
5. So...Rumpel and Cora had more than a professional working relationship. Is this just another aspect of Cora's attraction to power or were there feelings involved? Based on this do you think Regina is his daughter?
6. And where exactly is his son? It looked like North Carolina to me on the globe. Also, let's note that Maine did not light up. However, we don't know if it works on blood magic or if blood is the price and it then finds whatever/whoever you will it to find.
7. Who is the better mastermind: Cora or Gold? In a few short episodes Cora has let loose Hook on Rumpel to throw him off balance, reconciled with Regina, gotten Emma and Gold out of town, and made a deal for protection. Not bad!
8. Why exactly do you think Belle was in the hospital and wearing a hospital gown? She lost her memory (or rather had it replaced by curse memories) but she was otherwise perfectly healthy since Gold healed her gunshot wound at the beginning of the episode. They wanted her for observation maybe?
9. She smashed Chip. I guess that is the issue with having a relationship memento made out of delicate china. Do you think it will be repaired or is it gone forever? And True Love's Kiss didn't work to bring her back. But then we know it can't work if the other person doesn't remember and isn't ready to love you back.
10. Did you see Gold's threat at the end as a specific threat against the Charmings or more of a more general statement of fact. 'Protect her or I will kill everyone.' And Storybrooke becomes a war zone.

If Belle lost consciousness (and it looked like she did at least briefly after being shot), she should go to hospital for observation, so that didn't bother me.

I suppose observation makes sense. But it seemed a way to diminish her - her name and her true self were taken from her and now her clothes as well and her ability to walk out whenever she wants.

5. I hope she's not his daughter. That really cheapens the show for me. They don't have to all be related FFS!

5. It also turns Rumpelstiltskin into an idiot since we know he came by to collect soon after she was born. The man can count and use a calendar.

5. This is very true. I just wish I knew what they're doing...

3. It would go against the character's morals if they let him die. Of course, they had to save them. In all honesty, I would have lost a lot of respect if they let him die. I've lost my respect for Leroy.
4. And this is why the writing is inconsistent.
5. I am just seeing it as a business transaction. Nothing more.
8. She could have had some serious damage with the bullet. Even though they didn't address the issue... writers, fix this.
9. The cup is still alive, it was a fake cup she broke. They're auctioning off the real cup for charity. Rumple needs to calm his tits and calm down. It's going to be a Snow/Charming incident again.
I could care less if they got back together thoughno subject
3. I liked that Emma, Snow, and Charming all were shocked at the thought of not saving him. And not surprised that Grumpy was the pragmatic one who had an 'us versus them' viewpoint.
5. But it's a business transaction with kisses! And possibly more than kisses in the past which could have led to stronger feelings than just business. At the very least it makes thing more complicated between them in my opinion.
8. Rumpel healed her in the first few minutes of the episode so physically she is in perfect health. No plot hole there. :)
9. Within the show the cup is gone though. (I think the original was auctioned off some time last year. I remember it bringing in a good sum for the charity.) With Rumpel leaving town he is going to have some time to reflect and gain some perspective and with any luck he'll stop scaring the hell out of her.

I am pretty sure that she is his daughter. I believe there was a tale about the Miller's daughter, and it involved Rumple. It would also show that family of choice is true family, not just by blood, because you see the love between Henry Sr., who would be her stepfather, and Regina, as well as Henry "Jr." and Regina as his mother.

I would rather like to find out that Bae is not Rumpel's son by blood. They've foreshadowed that before and it would family of choice without the ickiness of the blood father corrupting the daughter.

I don;t know about the "ickiness" of the blood father corrupting the daughter. I think that the characters are the way they are because of choices that they made. Like what Rumple said to Emma in his shop after they returned: "I may have created the curse, but I didn't create that."
And I'm not sure where dark-skinned Regina would come from with Cora and Rumpel for parents. (Henry Sr. is played by a Latino actor.)
*steps on soapbox*
I would argue with the dark skinned Regina comment. My mother is Irish-German, my father part Cherokee/Seminole and Irish-German. Both of them look "white" or fair. Out of their four children, three of us have fair skin. My other sister, has especially dark tan skin. People thought she was adopted from Columbia when she was younger because of her coloring. She just looks like our grandfather, however. Sometimes the genes can "skip" a generation, I suppose. So it could be that.

As for Regina's coloring, yes certainly skin color is not a simple genetic inheritance. However, in this case, with so few POCs on the show, it would feel like whitewashing to remove Henry Sr. as the father and substitute Rumpel.
