Hello! I've reviewed the episode at my journal and I have some questions and discussion points to share. I've been making such posts over on the lj-comm (
abc_onceupon) for about a year now and I was wondering if anyone here would like to discuss the episodes as well. So I thought I would post them here! Each post consists of whatever random ideas came to me as I watched the episode as well as whatever seemed to be a good jumping off point for a discussion.
1. Let's start with the end. Who was thinking it was Belle in the hold of the ship? Even though I was pretty certain Archie was not dead I still figured that it must be Belle. The poor girl needs to figure out how to get captured less often.
2. Instead it was Archie, who not only is tied up and about to be tortured but also getting insulted by Hook. Will Archie tell them all about Gold and his son? I think he will since they not only have physical torture but also magic to use on him.
3. This is the third murder frame job they've had on the show and the second fake death, maybe it's time for a new plot? Just a thought. At least this one is different in the details and motivation though - for one thing this time we have a dead body.
4. Which makes me wonder if anyone is going to miss whoever she DID murder? And how about the dockworker? It seems he at least had a business and probably regular customers. I know Storybrooke is bigger on the inside but it would be nice if our heroes (who are the main law enforcement in town) noticed these other murders.
5. Would you eat Regina's lasagne knowing that she poisoned a fruit tart just a couple of weeks ago? I know we were supposed to feel sorry for her at the party (and I did) but it took a lot of trust to eat that.
6. And the sign! Is is a bad thing to be in trouble often enough that people can reuse your welcome back sign? I loved the 'and Emma' they tacked on the bottom.
7. Do you think it's a bad thing or a good thing that Emma used magic deliberately? Up until now she has only used magic accidentally but this time she tried and succeeded in using her magic. Since Gold intended to be long gone by now it's unlikely he had a plan for her magic. (though it seems he knew she had some sort of magic already) But, since you don't spend 300 manipulating people without being able to take full advantage of anything that comes your way, now I'm wonder what use he intends for her magic.
8. Why didn't they try to use the dream catcher on Regina? Belief that Regina would be able to use magic to alter the memories? Emma being too angry to think of it? Emma does seem to feel quite betrayed once she saw the murder. Up until then she was advocating strongly for Regina.
9. Will Regina now team up with Cora? Cora thinks she has done everything right to get her daughter back and needing her but Regina has someone she loves again. Henry may now believe Regina is guilty but, since he is still alive, there is still hope of fixing things.
10. How much does Hook want to get away from Cora? I don't think he feels bad about working with her or anything but he seems quite aware of how dangerous she is and finds her rather distasteful. Not that he didn't like his present. :)
11. Now we know why Regina was willing to use the curse rather than continue trying to kill Snow in FTL. But why did Snow decide to make yet another deal with Rumpelstiltskin? They managed to make a magic free prison for Rumpel quickly enough when they wanted to - why not lock up Regina if they weren't willing to execute her? And considering many other people she killed/hurt as Evil Queen, why would they think protecting themselves only would be sufficient?

Date: 2013-01-11 05:39 am (UTC)Also, I wonder why no one in town seems to notice (or care?) about folks who "disappear" (that faux Archie surely had friends or family who are wondering where he went, and what about the poor guy Cora turned into a fish? Surely someone would be missing him?).
While the fairytale people may opt for pitchforks and torches (and no evidence) in their "crime solving" methods and enforcement, I think Emma should be stronger in sticking to her own ethics and modern law, and not give in to the Charmings and others' peer pressure.
Also wish that the writers would either abandon the concept of Emma's "lie detection" powers, or actually use them properly for a change. They keep going back and forth depicting this, which has made this trait an annoying plot device.
And yes, I think Emma's use of magic has greatly intrigued Gold. He seemed quite fascinated while observing her using the dream catcher.
Regarding Hook: I think he actually dislikes Cora, and disapproves of her, but is so focused on his revenge, that (at least at the moment), he's thrown his scruples overboard.
Also hoping that the writers don't screw up Regina's redemption, which I'm rooting for.

Yes. More flow and more central.

I was happy that she stuck to it at first - looking for evidence and using her brain to realize it looked like frame job. However, Emma does have a temper and a tendency to rush into things when she's angry. (the apple tree, breaking into Regina's office, and so on) I mentioned it in my review that I saw Emma as feeling BETRAYED by Regina when she saw the memories.
As for Emma's lie detector, I thought they did a good job with it this episode and it's been more consistent this season. The way I read the episode, Emma 'heard' truth and felt truth when questioning Regina which is why she was so sure Regina was innocent but then the feeling of betrayal and seeing the crime overrode that. It's like when she was talking to Hook in Tallahassee - she may feel someone is being honest with her but she doesn't quite trust it anymore and isn't willing to rely on it.
And yes, I think Emma's use of magic has greatly intrigued Gold. He seemed quite fascinated while observing her using the dream catcher.
I REALLY can't wait to see more of that. I've greatly missed their interactions this season. And I love it when he's up to something.
